I\'m A Fu, the founder of Sanbodhi.
We make joss sticks
and also put items and artworks on display.
Joss sticks can be different,
depending on the season.
They help us adapt to the seasonal change.
Great Heat is what we call the time period
when lotuses are in full bloom.
Lotuses have 2,000 years of history in China.
A lotus is elegant, smells good,
and makes people feel pleasant.
It also helps energize people in hot weather.
Today, I will show you
how to make joss sticks with a lotus.
We grind the lotus leaf
and the stem into a powder.
Add some ginger and date.
Grind it again.
If you think it is difficult to grind,
you can buy lotus powder from a pharmacy.
Then add a little water and mix.
It can\'t be too dry or too sticky.
Has to be doughy and just right.
Then knead the dough into a stick.
The stick can not have any bubbles inside.
Else it\'ll break very easily.
The diameter of the stick has to be 2-5 mm.
The length can be 15-25 cm.
Then we straighten it a bit more.
For about 90 minutes,
keep adjusting the stick with two pieces of straight board
till the joss stick dries some more.
When the color fades, do it again.
Then the lotus joss stick is done.
I don\'t suggest we use it immediately.
Put it in a cool, ventilated place for half a month.
The best time to light a joss stick is between 9 am and 3 pm.
You can see the light smoke spiralling up.
Enjoy your leisure time with joss sticks.
