STORY: Situated in the Wu Dao Ying area of Beijing is one of the city's most density populated districts. Young people of all nationalities come here with their vibrant commercial atmosphere and many shops. Hidden in a residential area not far from the subway station is a young person's ideal haven, 706 Youth Space.
When the 706 youth space first opened, this simple loft-like space was only used for activities such as lectures and academic communication. Singer Sun Heng, public service organization Black Apple, Confucius scholar Yang Ruqing have joint the platform to share their experiences and knowledge with the crowded young people. Later on, 706 became a youth hotel. Travelers are now called 706 VIPs.
Cheng Baozhong, Co-founder of 706 Youth Space, "We started the space in 2012, and expanded our youth hostel service in 2013. One reason was that we couldn't afford the rent. Also because a lot of young people couldn't get back home since our discussion usually finished quite late at night. And many of them came from other cities, so they suggested if they could live in our space for a few days it would be great. They could also participate in a lot more events here. That’s how we became a youth hostel."
Despite the pressures of rent, they do not have an open-door policy to guests. On the homepage of the 706 website, their mission statement is very clear: we hope the interesting young people who stay here could integrate themselves into our 706 culture. So we request you send an email stating your experience and background, what you are currently doing, and what you hope to achieve in the future, and why you want to stay in 706.
Cheng Baozhong, Co-founder of 706 Youth Space, "We don’t accept clients who go traveling in the daytime and come back only for sleep. We try to nurture a healthy youth culture here. Most of our clients are excellent young people who have special thoughts. And they can help build up our space’s spirit."
Customer, Feng Yue, "I’m now studying Mathematic Physics in the US. I always care about what young people want to say. This accords with the original intention of 706 space which is to encourage young people to explore life, to discover themselves, and to pursue their dream."
Customer, Zhang Shiyin, "I've finished my master degree in biophysics. And now I’m applying for a doctor degree. There’s a long period in between when I’m less busy, so I come here. I can make acquaintance with a lot of talented peers who are very progressive in professional knowledge or life experiences. We can learn from each other. That’s great."
In 706 youth hotel, young people also have a sense of new practical approach to travel. Aside from accommodation, guests can also proactively organize their own activities.
Cheng Baozhong, Co-founder of 706 Youth Space, "There are three levels in terms of traveling. The first is package tour. The second is DIY tour. And the third is that you can get involved in local people’s life. People living in our space all have their specific focus areas and unique thoughts. Each of them can be an initiator and hold an event. Many of them are from other places than Beijing, and they often travel around China. Every time they get to a new place, they will find and stay in a local youth space. We hope that they can share their travel experiences with other friends, and in discussion maybe something new and interesting can happen."
Customer, Zhang Shiyin, "Sometimes I have some vague ideas that I want to share with others. But since they are not practiced in real life, I’d rather keep them only to myself. In 706 however, they will encourage me to initiate an event, and share with others my thoughts which are even immature life experiences or certain subject knowledge."
"Sometimes I question the meaning of my life. I don’t have money, or can I cure them of their disease. I can’t adopt them. Then what can I do? There was a period when I doubted myself badly. But he helped me find out what I can do. I can tell them through my words and action what type of people they can become of when they grow up."
Customer, Zhou Jingxi, "Before we start an event, we need to discuss the topic thoroughly. Every discussion is memorable. For example, once we wanted to launch a project about the relationship of technological innovation and starting up a business. We sat together and gave our opinions on the industry trends and stuff. So besides the project ideas, I learned a lot in other aspects, and made many new friends."
706 youth hotel runs a share hostel. Talking about future development, the host says it will standardize their management, stick to the verification system, and keep it small scale.
Cheng Baozhong, Co-founder of 706 Youth Space, "The youth hostel is tightly connected with the space. It’s an entire eco-system. Our clients have multiple roles. They are our customers, our supporters and our guests. Because they will launch a lot of projects here, and produce meaningful content. We benefit each other. So it’s a long-lasting system. We will keep doing this and in a more formal way."
